Guidelines for authors
General Instructions
The MVZ Córdoba Journal adheres to the general uniform requirements for biomedical journals (Vancouver Standards) with some specific modifications mentioned below.
Interested applicants must submit the following forms, duly completed and signed by each author, through the OJS platform: Author Declaration and Self-Review, available at https://revistamvz.unicordoba.edu.co/about/submissions
Type of articles published
Original articles. They report on advances in veterinary sciences based on scientific research; their length should not exceed 6000 words, including references, tables and figures.
Short communications. They have the same structure as the original articles; their length will be 1,800 to 3,000 words.
Clinical cases. The structure is similar to that of the brief communications, but the abstract is not structured. The introduction will be followed by the patient evaluation (bold subtitles: anamnesis, clinical examination findings, diagnostic aids, etc.) and the treatment approach.
Literature reviews. They consist of a critical analysis of the published literature on a topic of current interest and relevance to the veterinary sciences, with a length of no more than 7000 words. Titles and subtitles must be in bold type. The information contained in the review must be argued, supported or controverted. It will end with a critical contribution on the strengths, weaknesses and research opportunities of the proposed topic. Generally, the editor is the one who invites expert and widely recognized researchers.
Preparation of manuscripts
The manuscript should be written in the third person, written in word processor, single-spaced, in 12-point Verdana font, in a single column, with 3 cm margins. Abstract. It should be structured and should be between 150 and 250 words; written in a single paragraph. It should give a clear idea of the content of the manuscript, including subtitles in bold type: objective, materials and methods, results and conclusions. After each subtitle a period should be written and followed by a period from which the text of each section begins to be written.
Keywords. These are short terms that define the content of the manuscript; its classification and allow it to be located in an automated file. It is suggested to use six to eight words that are not contained in the title of the manuscript and written in alphabetical order. The terms from the list of thesauri should be used according to the research topic, such as MeSH, DeCS, NLM, CAB thesaurus, USDA, AIMS, FAO; tesauro de ASFA, Tesauro ICYT de Biología Animal, tesauro ambiental para Colombia, etc., and indicate at the end of them, the thesaurus or thesauri used written in brackets and in italics as follows:
Keywords: Goats; animal morphology; conservation programs (Fuente: CAB)
Palabras clave. They must be the same english keywords translated into spanish
Resumen. It is the same abstract in english translated into spanish; it must have the same structure and content.
Introduction. It must clearly indicate the purpose of the research, selectively relating the pertinent literature. No data or conclusions from the work being reported may be included. This section should end with the general objective.
Materials and methods. The procedures employed in the research, such as statistical design and data analysis, should be clearly described. This section should be structured (with subtitles) to specify type of study, study site, geoclimatic conditions, coordinates of the study site, patients or study animals, laboratory methods, ethical aspects, analysis of results, etc. The subtitles should be in bold and after each one of them a period should be placed and followed by a period from which the text begins to be written.
Ethical aspects. A brief description of the patient handling procedures (human or animal), the risks and safety guarantees offered during the study according to the type of research conducted should be provided. It should be stated that the research was only initiated when the authorization of the involved entities was obtained. It is necessary to attach the informed consent form for (human) participants, as well as the certification of the approval of the project issued by the corresponding Ethics Committee. The supporting documents must be written on the letterhead of the institution involved and then scanned for submission.
In addition, this section should cite the regulations in force in each country, including cleaner production, environmental conservation, animal welfare, as well as those international regulations that are globally mandatory.
Results. It corresponds to the information of the findings, but without including comments or references to other works. The use of tables and figures is suggested. Results should be expressed in the past tense, noting the level of statistical significance in parentheses (p≤0.05, p≤0.01, p>0.05). Tables and figures should be cited in this section in strict order. Citation in the text can be done in two ways: a). as shown in Table 2; or b)...capture success of 0.1313 individuals/net-hours (Table 1).
The units of measurement shall be quoted according to the metric decimal system and a space shall be left between the number and the unit, except for percentage signs (%), degrees Celsius (ºC) and weights ($), which shall always be attached to the number. Units of measurement should not be used in plural and should not have a period (e.g. kg instead of kgs, kg.). When a unit of measure applies to several numbers, only the last value should be used (Example: 8 - 15 kg instead of 8 kg - 15 kg). Decimals should not be expressed with a comma, but with a period. All compounds and reagents, as well as equipment used, should include in parentheses the parent company, headquarters city, state or country (Example: Sigma, St. Louis, MO). Trade names should not be included in the text and reference should always be made to the active ingredient.
Discussion. It is the interpretation of the results obtained and the contrast of these with related studies carried out by other authors. The limitations of the study should be highlighted and speculations should be avoided. It is necessary to include the conclusions of the study and recommendations for future research.
Conflict of interest. Journal MVZ Cordoba takes as a reference the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), regarding public confidence in the scientific process and the credibility of published articles depends in part on the transparent way in which conflicts of interest are handled during the planning, implementation, writing, peer review, editing and publication of scientific papers. See more in: http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/author-responsibilities--conflicts-of-interest.html
It is recommended, but not mandatory, to fill out the ICMJE form.
Acknowledgments. List the names of persons, institutions, companies, laboratories, farms, etc., that have collaborated with the research (financing, logistics, etc.). This section is not mandatory, but it is recommended. It will have a maximum of 60 words.
Conflict of interest. It should be indicated that the authors have no conflicts of any kind related to the execution of the research.
Financing. The mechanism for financing the research should be included.
References. They should be numbered consecutively according to the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, using Arabic numerals in parentheses (1). Only those articles directly related to the research should appear in this section. If an article has from one to six authors, all of them should be included in the reference; but if there are more than six, the expression et al should be written without italics and without punctuation (et al). Journal titles should be abbreviated (short name, without punctuation) according to the style used in IndexMedicus. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=journals). All references must have direct URL or their respective DOI.
The list of references should be presented in strict order of appearance in the text; not in alphabetical order. Up to 40 references will be accepted for original manuscripts; up to 60 for literature reviews and up to 20 for clinical cases and short communications.
Abstracts of congresses, seminars, events, courses, presentations, technical reports, bulletins, personal communications, non-indexed electronic consultations, monographs, websites, as well as undergraduate papers will not be accepted as references.
References must be up to date and not older than 10 years. If necessary, they may be included with due justification, but may not exceed 15% of the total number of references. Only up to two references from books or electronic consultations will be accepted.
Assignment of rights. Authors and co-authors must send the signed originality statement electronically at the time of submission of the article. No article may be submitted for peer review without the submission of such declaration.
Once the articles have been selected for publication, the author(s) will be sent the respective assignment of economic rights, which must be returned electronically as soon as possible, duly signed, in order to continue with the process.
In the event that the rights have been previously assigned to an Institution financing the project, the authors must inform the entity and establish the respective authorization to assign the rights over the determined text, guaranteeing the non-existence of conflict of interest between the Publishing Institution and the one financing the research, in case they are different. In this sense, the assignment of rights submitted to the Journal will be understood to prevail over any general or particular assignment, and it is the author's obligation to resolve any incompatibilities that may arise.
