Dentro de las variadas patologías del Sistema Nervioso Central (SNC), las dos entidades clínicas más importantes por su frecuencia de aparición en el mundo son las meningitis y las encefalitis. Las infecciones del SNC constituyen un reto diagnóstico porque las manifestaciones clínicas no son normalmente patognomónicas y existen diversos agentes etiológicos implicados. Solamente se logra determinar entre el 40-70% el agente etiológico de los casos de las encefalitis y en menos del 0.1% se logra aislar un virus diferente a los enterovirus o herpesvirus (1).
